Present Simple

 

Use

We use the Present Simple:

 

For habits and actions that we do regulary:

He visits his friends every Sunday.

She goes to school by bus.

 

For general truths:

The sun rises in the East.

 

For permanent situations:

He lives in Athens.

 

 

Expressions used with the Present Simple

 

Frequency adverbs: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never (they are placed before the main verb)

 

Time Expressions:

every day / week / Friday…

on Mondays / Sundays…

at the morning / afternoon…

in winter / spring

once a day / week…

Frequency Adverbs
USE

We use frecuency adverbs to describe how often something happens.  We use them with  the Present Simple tense.

 

Always (100%)         Usually (75%)         Often (50%)         Sometimes (25%)          Never (0%)

 

Position

 

We place the frecuency adverbs BEFORE the main verbs (in Present Simple).

  •   I always walk to work.
  •   He doesn’t usually wear jeans.
  •   Do you often write letters?

But, we put them AFTER the verb TO BE.

  •   He is never late.
  •   The children aren’t usually tired after school.
  •   Are you often sad?

 

Other expressions of frequency

 

How  often…?     To  ask  about  the frequency   of an action.   We place it at  the beninning of the question.

 

How often  …  {do, does} …  {I, you, he / she / it, we, they} … verb … ?

 

How often  do you  go to the  cinema?

How often  does  Mary cook?

 

{once, twice, three times, four times…}  a {day, week, month, year}

Use  once / twice.   (NOT  one time, two times)

once (una vez),  twice (dos veces)

 

We go to the  theatre  once  a  week.

Peter plays football  five  times  a month.

 

Every     {evening / morning / night…, day / weekend… Saturday / Monday…  week / year…}

 

Mary cooks   every day.

I play tennis  every Sunday.

 

The rest of the frequency expressions are placed at the end of the sentence.

I drink tea.      (every morning)

Mary rides her motorbike to work.      (sometimes)

    Mary sometimes rides her motorbike to work. Maria a veces va en moto al trabajo.

Does Jane have lunch at home?      (usually).

C.  Use the prompts and the frequency adverbs to write sentences about yourself.
